Services to Help Me Find a Job

The Georgia Department of Labor has prepared Paths to Employment to help you access job search tools, search for a job, find a new career path, or learn new skills to jump start your plan for a new job or career.

Unemployment Benefits for School System Employees

School System employees, who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, may be eligible to receive unemployment benefits. Eligibility can only be determined once an unemployment claim is filed and established as valid. You should file your claim immediately after your last day of work even if you were paid through the summer. A determination of eligibility will be made based on the reason and details of the separation from the most recent employer.

Qualifications for Eligibility
  • Sufficient wages in the base period to establish a valid claim
  • No fault for separation from most recent liable employer
  • Earned ten times the weekly benefit amount of the claim with the most recent employer.
Monetary Eligibility

An unemployment claim can be established with a minimum weekly benefit amount of $44 and a maximum weekly benefit amount of $330.

Reasons for Separation

  • Voluntary Quit - employee leaves employment on his/her own free will without coercion of any kind from the employer
  • Discharge - employer initiates the separation which includes the employee being given the option to resign
  • Layoff - employer initiates the separation because of a lack of work, i.e. budget cuts, business closure, etc.
Burden of Proof on Separations

  • Voluntary Quit - burden of proof is on the claimant
  • Discharge/Forced Resignation - burden of proof is on the employer
Appeals

Either party has a right to file a timely appeal within 15 days of the release date of the determination of eligibility, if they disagree with the determination.
